Meet your GMVY Coaches

Coach Seth Thacker, Head Coach

Coach Seth is beginning his 1st year as the GMVY Head Coach in 2011. As a competitive swimmer, he began swimming at the age of four and started swimming year-round when he was eight for the Hamilton West YMCA. Before he went to swim four years on scholarship at Wright State University, he swam for the Fairfield YMCA for two years. Seth spent his time between the Great Miami Valley Y's swim year-round for the USA team, the Miami Valley Aquatic Club, MAKOS in Oxford, OH. His whole entire swimming career consisted of competitive swimming here in the Southwest part of Ohio.

 

Seth has coached swimming at every competitive level. He began as a part time assistant for the Oxford Swim and Diving Team in Oxford, OH. While at Wright State he taught swim lessons and spent two summers as the co-Head coach of the Oakwood City Swim Team in Dayton, OH, and helped build the team to over 200 swimmers and win their 1st league championship. After graduation, Seth spent a year as the Assistant Swim Coach at his alma mater, Talawanda High School in Oxford, OH. From 2008 to 2010 Seth was the Assistant Swim Coach at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. One of Seth's many accomplishments swimming for the Great Miami Valley Y's was being ranked in the Top 16 of the National YMCA listings starting at the age of 10. Seth is looking forward to bringing excitement, enthusiasm, and the sheer love for swimming, especially in the Southwest region of Ohio.

    Coach Jenn is in her 2nd year as Flippers Assistant Coach.  She began her swimming     career at the age of 9 at the Powel Crosley YMCA.  Once of Jenn's many accomplishment

    was being ranked in the Top 16 of the National YMCA listings at the young age of 11.  She

    also swam three seasons for the GMVY Flippers.

    Jenn continued her swimming career at Bowling Green State University as a Division I     InterCollegiate swimmers.  She walked on to the team her Freshman year and qualified

    in the Top 8 in two events and Top 16 in one event at the MAC Division Championships     earning her a full scholarship.  Jenn graduated in May 2008 from BGSU with a Bachelor of     Fine Arts.

    Jenn is also a graduate of Winton Woods high school, where she was a four-year varsity     swimmer.  She has also coached the Fairfield City Piranha Swim Team for two seasons.       Jenn brings with her an enthusiasm for coaching all levels of swimmers and a great

    knowledge of competitive swimming.  Jenn is very excited to join our team and looks

    forward to getting to know each swimmer.

Coach Miriam Hollan, Assistant Coach
    Coach Miriam began her tenure with the Flippers in 1999.  The 2010-2011 season
    marks her 12th year as Assistant Coach with the team and has led many 6 & unders, 
    7-8 and 9-10 year olds to multiple league AA Championship meets in addition to many
    9-10 swimmers to the Great Lakes Zone Invitational.  She also coaches the Beckett
    Ridge Barracudas Swim Team, located in West Chester, Ohio, for many seasons, 
    leading them to win 15 consecutive Tri-County Swim League Championship.  Prior to
    joining the GMVY Flippers and moving to Cincinnati, Miriam also coached various youth
    swim teams in Pennsylvania.

    Miriam holds a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Shippensburg
    University of Pennsylvania and is currently focusing on a career in marketing
    and event management at EyeMed Vision Care, a division of Luxottica Retail.  While at
    Shippensburg, she was a member of the varsity swim team and achieved 7 All
    American honors from the NCAA Division II for her swimming achievements.  She can
    still be found on the SU's Top 10 Times list for the women's team in both the 100 and
    200 backstroke events.  Miriam also currently competes in various United States
    Masters Swimming invitationals.

Coach Steve Braun, Assistant Coach          
     Steve Braun has been coaching swimming since 1990.  He was the Head Coach
    at Hamilton High School from 1990-1995 and has been the Head Coach at the Rolling
    Hills Swim Club
 in Fairfield since 1994.  Steve joined the coaching staff at GMVY in 2000.

    Steve is a graduate of Hamilton High School and Ohio State and has been teaching 
    Social Studies at Hamilton High School since 1990.

Coach Tommy Harden, Assistant Coach

    The 2010-2011 short course season marks Coach Tommy’s first as coach with the team,
    However, he began his swimming career with the Flippers in 1991 at the young age of 5 and
    has been involved in the sport in various capacities since then. He is entering his 4th year as
    Assistant Coach for the Fairfield High School Team and is in his 2nd year as Head Coach of
    the Fairfield Middle School Team.  This past summer he also joined Coach Jenn Betts in
    leading the Fairfield City Aquatic Center swim team to another successful season. Tommy is
    currently pursuing an accounting degree from the University of Cincinnati.
